Sonya Hunte

Sonya Hunte serves as the Vice President of Education Impact for the United Way of Anchorage. She oversees the 90% Graduation by 2020 initiative, a private public, community-based partnership that aims to reach and sustain an Anchorage high school graduation rate of 90 percent or more by 2020. This work is broken down into developmental learning stages matched with appropriate intervention strategies – birth to five; pre-k to 8th grades; and 9th through 12th. A career social worker, Sonya serves on the board of directors for the National Association of Social Workers (NASW) an organization committed to the development of its 112,000 members and the communities they serve. Sonya’s genuine love for disenfranchised communities and people is both recognizable and contagious.

Prior to relocating to Alaska, Sonya worked for the Atlanta Public Schools as the Director of Family Engagement where she promoted family and alumni strategic initiatives through district-wide and school-based models. Sonya’s expertise covers a spectrum of Social Work specialties to include Child Welfare and K-12 Education Programs for at – risk youth.

Sonya is the recipient of many awards and distinctions to include Georgia Trend Magazine and the Atlanta Business Chronicle’s, 2013 Forty Under Forty Awards; Girls Inc. of Greater Atlanta, Strong Award 2013; and Outstanding Atlanta Award 2012, the city’s premier honor for civic engagement. She is a proud member of America’s oldest African American organization for college trained women, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. and a recipient of the 2017 Metro Atlanta Founders’ Day, Service to Mankind Award.

She holds a Bachelor of Science in Sociology from the Pennsylvania State University and a master’s in clinical social work from Boston College.
